Here at Black Fox HQ, we LOVE National Poetry Month! Every year, we try to share a few prompts to get you inspired! We could always use a little more poetry in the world, right? Below is a compilation of the poetry prompts we shared on our Instagram account during National Poetry Month 2024. Of course, you can revisit these prompts anytime you need a little extra inspiration!
1. Write a poem that tackles the emotions surrounding an old or forgotten letter. (From BFLM Founder, Racquel Henry)
2. What does your favorite color sound like to you? Don’t be afraid to get weird! (From BFLM Poetry Editor Heather Lang-Cassera)
3. Imagine your childhood bedroom and all it entails: the bed, the sheets, the toys, the posters, the smell, the touch. What calls to you in this space? What do you know now, as present-day you, that brings clarity to this space? Is coming back to this spot painful, happy, or melancholic? Write a twenty-line poem focusing on this emotion and sensory details. (From BFLM Contributor Mathieu Cailler)
4. Look at your most recent shopping list. Include at least three of the items in a poem. (From BFLM Poetry Editor Heather Lang-Cassera)
5. When was the last time you spilled something? In a poem, write that story in reverse, starting with the spill. (From BFLM Poetry Editor Heather Lang-Cassera)
Happy writing!
