In this edition of Inside the Den, we’re featuring Alli Rense, who will celebrate two years on the Black Fox reading team this May. As a dedicated reader of fiction and flash fiction, Alli brings a keen appreciation for stories that hover at the edge of the speculative—those that surprise without losing their grounding. Her careful attention to craft and narrative shape helps us see each submission clearly, and her perspective continues to strengthen the work we champion.
Black Fox Literary Magazine: How did you become a reader for Black Fox?
Alli Rense: I was browsing the website when I saw an open opportunity for readers.
BFLM: What kinds of stories or themes are you most drawn to?
AR: I love stories that play on the edge of speculative. I like things that are slightly bizarre and a little uncomfortable, but not outright horror. I like to be surprised, but in an “I see what they did there” kind of way, not a “that was completely out of the blue” way. I’m drawn to themes around parenthood, childhood, and nostalgia.
BFLM: What’s your biggest pet peeve when it comes to reading a submission?
AR: Dead cats. Particularly dead cats that serve little to no purpose in the story. You’d be surprised how often I see this.
BFLM: What makes a submission stand out (in a good way)?
AR: I absolutely love a unique, authentic narrative voice. When done well, it’s like the person is sitting in front of me, telling me the story.
BFLM: What’s something you’ve learned from reading submissions that surprised you?
AR: Reading submissions has helped me to cut down on exposition in my own stories. I think as writers we assume people need more backstory, when really, it’s more effective to draw people in right when the action starts.
BFLM: What’s a story you love and think about often?
AR: As soon as I read this question, “Directions” by Judy Budnitz came to mind. I love the interconnected narratives, and the ending is brilliant.
BFLM: If your personality were a literary genre, what would it be—and why?
AR: Dark humor, because I’m always looking for the silver lining.
BFLM: Many thanks, Alli, for the insight, curiosity, and sharp discernment you bring to the fiction queue. Your eye for authentic voice and purposeful storytelling helps us recognize the pieces that truly resonate.
